The Imperative is to Love Yourself

Do you love yourself? Why not? You should. You must, really.

Unless we love ourselves, it is not possible to truly love others. Why? Understanding what love is must pass through our unavoidable filter of first loving ourselves.

Loving self involves making an honest assessment of what we are and what we are not. Loving self does not mean that we find ourselves to be perfect. We are not talking about denial or setting out on an ego trip. For example, if we have a smoking habit there is no requirement that we love that about ourselves. Discovering our love of self requires that we acknowledge our imperfections and, perhaps, deciding to make some changes (or not).

We may go through life telling others we love them without knowing what love means. We can hug and kiss them. We can speak words of love; empty words. When we finally do understand the meaning of love, we can express our love of others without loving everything about them. Others are not perfect but they need not be to earn our love and respect.

Here is a suggestion. Endeavor to understand what love is by first loving yourself and only then permitting yourself to love others by applying your newly discovered understanding to them.

Now get busy as there is work to be done.
