Where is your hometown? For many, the town they consider their hometown is not where they currently live. Jobs, life style or family demands take us away from home. Some have moved many times in life and may never have really settled in.
Many of us retain fond memories of our old hometown. We miss the people and the times we had with them. Some of those people have always lived there while a few others moved back to town in retirement. The warmth and acceptance found there seems to be missing elsewhere.
For those who do not live “back home”, there is an easy way to stay in touch with what is going. Start by searching the Internet using the call letters of the AM radio station located there. When the home page opens, click on the “Listen Live” tab and let the news, views and music begin. You will be instantly transported through time and space. Close your eyes and you can picture yourself there among your friends once more.
Radio does not get much play these days. That is especially true of live AM radio. Those under thirty may not know that it exists and certainly would never listen to it. They are too busy with their iPhone listening to hits on iTunes.
We are often told that we should live in the moment. We should. However, today’s moment came from earlier moments in our lives: our roots. We should honor our memories and those who helped to create them. A few minutes, every once in awhile, spent listening to hometown radio can fit into the schedule of even the busiest among us.
Personal favorites?
www.WAJR in Morgantown, WV where I was born and later graduated from WVU.
www.WJPA near Houston, PA which was my boyhood hometown from age 8 through 18.
Final note: I have lived happily in the mountains of western North Carolina for almost thirty years. For me, this location has become home but it has never completely replaced my hometown in my heart.
Please enjoy listening to this 1983 #1 hit song by The Kendalls on iTunes – “Thank God for the Radio.”
Good thoughts! I still have many fond memories of San Fernando, California and keep in touch with the community there.
