Anytown, USA Difference Makers

Every community worth living in is made better by those who care enough to make a positive difference. You likely know one or more of those who fill this valuable role. You may be one of those persons.

Who are these folks? They may serve on a citizens committee considering a new public park. Coaches of youth sports teams, library volunteers, those who deliver meals-on-wheels, fund raisers for local charities, litter pick-up crew members, volunteer fire fighters, and scout leaders are also examples.

They give both time and money because they believe in the cause; they care about the community. Without them, the community would waste away.  While every town has volunteers like these, it is safe to say that every town needs more of them.

A convenient check list of excuses is provided here for those who decide to let others carry the load. Note that these excuses can span an entire adult life.

* My children are young. I will help when they are grown and gone. (Can be used for first twenty years.)

* I am too busy with my job to spare any time. (The this one can be used for next twenty years.)

* I am retired. (Finally, use this one for the rest of your life.)

Those who seek to make a positive difference don’t use excuses. They make their time and talents available because they know that a community without willing volunteers is not where they want to live.

Suggested Exercise:

1) List a few names of people in your town who make a positive difference.

2) Select one or two of them and thank them for what they do.

3) If you are not already a difference maker, consider how you could become one.
