Examples abound and “trending” is definitely happening. All About Me behavior is increasingly evident in the on-camera appearances and social media statements of celebrities, star athletes, politicians, protestors, students, news broadcasters, journalists, and some minorities (not just racial).
When they make their statements of outrage and dissent, we reassure them and remind ourselves that they “have the right to speak” because that right is guaranteed by the 1st amendment.
However, many of those who register their dissent in a loud voice do not seem to be well informed. If they truly seek broad support for their stated cause, they have an obligation to study in order to provide others with informed opinions. They should also have some past experience in working for and donating to that cause. Otherwise, we are being subjected to hearing empty and uninformed words spoken by those whose real motivation remains in doubt.
Too often, All About Me people cloak themselves in some cause that will gain them the spotlight. When the cameras are ready to roll, their rant begins. Financial backing, in the form cash or paid product endorsements, often underpins their “belief in the cause.”
Personal Note: There are worthy causes and informed believers who speak for those causes. However, there are too causes being pushed every day by too many All About Me spokespersons for me to sort them out. The good and honest ones get lost in all the noise made by the others.
