Beware of Smooth Talkers

Have you ever been taken in by or victimized by a smooth talker? These are people we encounter whose every word rings with conviction. We find ourselves believing them and doing what they tell us to do.

Extreme examples would be Hitler in World War II and Jim Jones in the Jonestown massacre. Their power of persuasion was so strong that their followers murdered others and they sacrificed themselves.

All of us been taken in by smooth talkers in our lives. Politicians, pastors or priests, sales people, family members, radio and television news commentators, Hollywood actors, love interests and others are guilty of transgressions. We fall for their promises and allow them to manipulate us. The young (30 and under) are particularly susceptible as they have limited life experience. However, some of us never learn and, after many years of life experience, continue to fall victim to these hustlers.

Is there really any damage that results? Quite certainly, yes there is. Time, money, self-esteem, relationships and peace of mind are often lost.

Chances are good that some smooth talker will seek access to your ears in the next few days. When they speak, add their names to your bullshit list and tune them out. Then keep your bullshit filter in working condition. The next smooth talker is already out there waiting for you.

Person Note: I have arrived at an age in my life where my susceptibility to bullshit purveyors is extremely limited. I call them out on their unacceptable attempts and wish that I had always turned my back on them.
