Is Anything Wrong?

Is Anything Wrong?

How would you rate the following? In your view, which are RIGHT and which are WRONG?

Divorce   Abortion  Recreational Marijuana  Undocumented Immigrants   Gender Identity

Changes in values and societal norms have long been a part of human history. Still, I cannot believe how much the definition of wrong has changed over the course of my seventy-seven years of life. At times, I wonder if anything is wrong these days. I am having a tough time keeping up with the changes and don’t even understand where some of them are coming from.

As you read this, please understand that even in my youth I did not agree with some of the things that were considered “right”. Even as a young boy, I questioned how segregation of the races could possibly be right. It wasn’t and it has changed for the better.

Discovering, accepting and living without an ever-changing set of rights and wrongs is a challenge for many of us.  How does one know right from wrong when there is no clear and acceptable explanation of either one? Could it be that anything is right for a person who really believes it is?  Or wrong for the same reason.

Those who have read my past essays know that I sometimes attach a link to a song that attempts to reinforce the point I am trying to make. As you listen to these lyrics written by Cole Porter in 1934, consider how much the definition of what is right and what is wrong may have changed in your lifetime. I welcome your comments as this whole thing is a struggle for me.

  1. Duke Woodhull says:

Shakespeare would agree with you…long ago in one of his plays, a character said: “Nothing is good nor bad, but thinking makes it so.” Coming from Shakespeare, the quote sounds somewhat uplifting…but in the current sad climate of moral relativism, it is troubling.

    • Duke, Thank you for the input. When there is as little public discourse as there is today, there is little prospect of a norm being established. When one can pour a bucket of water on a police officer in NYC and not have the mayor step in, things are not getting better.
