As we wade into the social media stream each day, each item seen floating by requires that we make a decision. Do we click to LIKE or SHARE an item seen on our screen? This stream offers an endless array of subjects. Some were sent specifically to you but most show up when someone quickly clicked to share the photo of a dog that needs adoption, their cousin’s grandchild, a flower garden in Arizona, a vacation in who knows where, a group photo of people that you do not know, or a clever (or not so clever) video. My personal favorite is, “I bet this won’t get one share.” You can bet it won’t get mine. Can I get a click on “Amen?”
A simple, single click may sound like an easy and trivial action. Just click it and move on to the next click. Yet, my finger hangs over the keyboard awaiting my decision. More often than not I cannot move to click the item. I am frozen; but why?
The item may contain non-factual information. Signing a petition may really be phishing attempt to steal my identity. Most who seek my click have no bearing on my life. Finally, my social network friends are already flooded with invitations to click and have likely seen the same item several times.
The incoming volume often seems like trying to sip a drink from a fire hose. Often there seems to be no reason to open and then share an item. If you agree just click here _______.
