Do some people choose to die young? WHY?
HOW? Alcohol, drugs, and obesity!
Popular entertainers in music, comedy and movies have been making those choices for years. When these celebrity deaths occur, they make headline news. There are many notable examples. Here are just three.
County music star Keith Whitley choose alcohol over life and died at 34 in 1989.
Comedian John Candy choose obesity (over 300 pounds) over life and died at 43 in 1994.
Movie star River Phoenix choose drugs and died at 23 in 1993.
When a member of the public makes that choice, their passing makes little news. The cause of death is not mentioned in their obituary. Friends and neighbors briefly speculate, say “what a shame” and move on with their lives.
Here is my request. If you care about anyone headed down this self-destructive path, don’t just be a spectator. Share your deep concern. Point them toward some help. Ultimately, they may not listen and act, as they have the right to choose death over life. But if they do choose death, my original question remains unanswered. WHY?
A community needs to provide resources and leadership. Not only staffing, but connectivity and funding to help those that have veered off life’s optimal path. Substance abuse is a negative in our community. Prolonged alcohol, drug abuse leads to lasting mental. Life has distractions that can lead to substance abuse. Like Bills indicates, we need to be stewards to our community and help those in need of help.

There are instances when we can see early indications that a family member or friend is headed for trouble. Never say that this could not happen to you or someone you know and love. The time to act is when those early signs show themselves. I am not a trained professional but have not needed to be to get the discussion started.

There comes a point in the addiction process where you no longer have a choice to drink/use. I remember vividly NEEDING to drink like a drowning man need a breath of air. Suicide was a viable option then I found a 12 step program. I haven’t found that need again in almost 47 years

You have made a positive difference in my life and the lives of many others. I had no idea that drink could have cost us a great friendship.
