“Savings” given by BIG BOX stores on appliance purchases are wiped out by “service” charges. They are playing a shell game with customer money.
We purchased our existing 50-gallon electric heater in 2006. The heater cost $401 and the cost to deliver/install/dispose was $179 for a total of $580. (Kept all receipts on file.)
Yesterday, I shopped at the same store for a new water heater. The quote was for an identical replacement. It would be an easy one-for-one swap as there would be no additional installation complications. The quote for the heater was $479. Sounded like a bargain considering the 15 years that had passed. The installing service (not a service offered by the big box store that sells the water heater) would contact me to complete the quote.
The phone rang in about an hour. My quote was ready; I was not. The water heater would be $479 with charges to deliver/install/dispose of $1,175 for a total of $1,654.
Year Water Heater Deliver/Install/ Disposal Grand Total
2006 $401 $179 $580
2021 $479 $1,175 $1,654
What did I do? As any sane person would, I phoned my regular, trustworthy plumbing service. They will provide a better-quality water heater/warranty/install for $350 less.
Reminder to Self: Before taking the bait offered by a big box store, call your plumber.
